Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Teaching Positions

OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE is looking for PhD students who are interested in teaching next year. OLLI is a learning program for retirees 55+ and offers a paid position and the ability to design your own course.

The OLLI Scholars program is a opportunity for Graduate, PhD and professional school students to design and deliver a full course to OLLI members. Payment is $1,000 per course. We have a classroom in McNamara so students need not have a vehicle. Additionally, we can also offer classes anywhere on campus that will host us including the St. Paul Campus. 

A bit about OLLI:

OLLI is a lifelong learning program for persons 55+. OLLI members are highly educated and intellectually curious. Many are retired professors or professionals who are pursuing lifelong passions and interests through OLLI's non credit course offerings. OLLI courses tend to be on the "scholarly" side, offering academic challenge but without the tests and grades. OLLI members enjoy learning about the latest research and findings in a wide variety of fields. It is for this reason that the OLLI Scholar program was created. I have attached our spring 2016 Course Guide as an of the breadth and depth of courses offered by OLLI.

Here's the most important thing about this program: While OLLI Scholars do benefit from the design and delivery process which may enhance their resume, not to mention the pay, most report that the real pay-off is in teaching this particular population of highly engaged, well informed students who actively participate in class and ask great questions. A number of OLLI Scholars have returned to present a course or a single topic for no pay, just because they enjoyed their experience as an OLLI Scholar.

There are three steps in the OLLI application process:

1) Fill out a simple "Interest Form" which can be found on the OLLI Scholar website. HERE IS THE LINK TO THE INTEREST FORM.

2) Be prepared to have a conversation with an OLLI volunteer to further discuss their course idea.

3) Complete a longer, though still quite brief, Course Proposal which will be sent after the telephone conversation. The biggest challenge in completing the form is coming up with a short title and 75 word description.

If selected, the scholar must secure written permission from their adviser; OLLI supplies the form. The deadline for completing the Interest Form is May 20, 2016 but early applications are appreciated.

COGS Career Development Discussion

COGS will be hosting a conversation on career development for graduate and professional students on Friday, April 29^th in 101 Walter Library. Lunch will be from 12:30 – 1:00pm with discussion to follow from 1:00 – 3:00pm.

A message from COGS:

We would like to invite you to participate in a student-driven conversation on Friday, April 29 about career development for graduate and professional students. What is currently happening at the U? What types of support and resources do we need as students? How can we help shape the future direction of career exploration at the U for graduate and professional students? We want to hear your opinions and ideas! We look forward to a productive day and we’re excited to come together with other students to help define what we need related to career development.

We will serve a free pizza lunch and beverages from 12:30-1 pm in 101 Walter Library to kick-off the afternoon, with discussions following from 1-3 pm. To encourage participation and input from all attendees, we will use a meeting format known as Open Space Technology; view this video to get a sense of what that will look and feel like. We will record all the ideas that are generated and share them with all of you, with other students, and with others who can help us to move forward with an action agenda for graduate student career exploration.

The success of this initiative depends on the participation of students from all parts of the U.  We want to capture the experiences and input of students at different stages of their careers, and from different fields.  Please consider joining us, and RSVP here.

THE 22^nd ANNUAL DAVID NOBLE LECTURE featuring ROBIN KELLEY will be on Tuesday, April 26^th from 7:00 – 8:30pm in the Best Buy Theater at Northrop Auditorium. Kelley’s talk is titled “A Female Candide: U.S. Empire, Racial Cartographies, & the Education of Grace Halsell, 1952 – 1986” and will explore the life Grace Halsell, a white female journalist who posed as Black, Mexican, and Navajo writing a book about each experience. Leigh Claire La Berge Talk

 

DR. LEIGH CLAIRE LA BERGE is currently working on a book entitled Wages Against Artwork: The Social Practice of Decommodification, sections of which have been published in South Atlantic Quarterly and Postmodern Culture. Concerned with the economic trend of uncompensated work and the aesthetic trend of artwork that seeks to ameliorate social inequality, Wages Against Artwork asks what kind of claims the aesthetic can make in an expiring welfare state.

Her first book, Scandals and Abstraction: Financial Fiction of the Long 1980s (Oxford, 2015) tracked the contest between postmodern and realist fictions about finance in a nascent era of financialization, and her articles have appeared in Radical Philosophy, Studies in American Fiction, Criticism, Journal of Cultural Economy, and the Radical History Review. She is the co-editor, along with Alison Shonkwiler, of Reading Capitalist Realism (Iowa, 2014). She is assistant professor of English at the City University of New York (BMCC).
