CHIC 3900: Police Violence and Mass Incarceration

CHICANA/O STUDIES is excited to offer CHIC 3900: Topics in Chicana/o Studies: Police Violence & Mass Incarceration this Fall. The course will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 – 5:15pm and will be taught by Assistant Professor Lena Carla Palacios. See below for the course description.

We engage critically with issues raised by police violence and mass incarceration of Chicanas/os-Latinas/os, asking what legal historians, critical race theorists and feminist criminologists can bring to the conversation and what we can learn from the critical analysis and collective action of scholar-activists who are at the forefront of migrant justice and anti-prison movements. Given the importance of social media for the documentation, analysis and activist organizing in response to policing, detention and deportation, the main assignments in this course are blog posts, video essays, community engagement, and youth-led participatory action research (YPAR). Although the course focuses on Chicanas/os-Latinas/os it is comparative in nature and will incorporate the voices and experiences of African American, American Indian, and Asian American communities in the Twin Cities.

Course Reserves at the LIbrary

THE LIBRARY offers many resources as instructors prepare for Fall Courses. One of these is course reserve for books, films, or course packets. See below for more information.

Course reserve is available on-site or online.  Both appear in the Library Course Page and can be integrated with Moodle, making course materials easy for students to find and access.

On-site reserve consists of books, films, or course packets shelved at any Twin Cities campus library.  To submit an on-site reserve request, email a list of items you’d like placed on reserve to the contact for the campus library you’d like as your reserve site.  Contacts for reserve sites can be found here:

Online reserve can include a variety of materials--excerpts from books, direct links to articles from e-journals, video clips, slides from class lectures, fair use materials, materials that cost a copyright fee, and more.  The reserve system is compatible with mobile devices.

To request an online reserve page, email your reading list or syllabus to wilsrsv@umn.edu.  If your request may include items that cost a copyright fee, please be sure to submit your request at least 4 weeks before the semester begins to allow time for processing.
