Humphrey School Fall Courses
THE HUMPHREY SCHOOL will have three courses taught by famous politicians next fall. The first, PA 5990, The Politics of U.S. Policy, will be taught by former Congressman Vin Weber. The last two, PA 4490, Topics in Social Policy, and PA 5012, The Politics of Public Affairs, will be co-taught by former Vice President Walter Mondale.
PA 5990, Section 003: The Politics of U.S. Policy,
This fall, the Humphrey School has the incredible opportunity to offer a class taught by former Congressman Vin Weber, who is currently one of the most well-connected political leaders in DC (particularly through his key role on the Council on Foreign Relations).
The course will focus on a series of critical episodes in U.S. domestic and foreign policy, mixing lectures and seminar presentations. As part of the class, Vin Weber is bringing in some impressive and influential colleagues, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Interested in interacting in a small graduate course setting with DC heavy-hitters? Looking to work in DC or an international NGO upon graduation? Then this is the class for you.
This class meets 7 Fridays from 9:05 - 11:50am and runs from September 19 - November 14, 2014.
PA 4490: Topics in Social Policy and PA 5012: The Politics of Public Affairs
Professor Larry Jacobs is teaching a new class with former Vice President Walter Mondale that wrestles with the big debates regarding presidential power and national security. Seven real-world crises are studied including Harry Truman's efforts to seize the steel mills to prevent a labor dispute, Richard Nixon's claims of executive privilege to prevent the release of his secret tapes, and Barack Obama's use of state secrets to preclude judicial review of the executive branch's electronic surveillance and detainee retention. These are pivotal moments that define our ongoing efforts to balance democratic accountability, protection of individual liberties, and national security.
The class meets on Thursdays from 6:00 - 8:45pm and runs from September 2 - December 10, 2014.
