Speaking Science is a science communication conference designed to help scientists, engineers, and other researchers develop stronger storytelling skills that will make their work understandable and compelling to the media, thought leaders, potential funders and general audiences. The conference is specifically designed to provide faculty, post-docs and graduate students across the University of Minnesota with a unique opportunity to learn how to better communicate their science to audiences beyond the academic community.

The one-day conference will feature a keynote speech by New York Times columnist Carl Zimmer, interactive training with the Alan Alda Center for Science Communication, and break-out sessions that include mock interviews with local journalists that will provide participants with invaluable feedback about how to frame their research in the most compelling way possible. An evening reception will include private access to the Weisman Art Museum’s Prince from Minneapolis exhibit.

Palimpsest, Volume IX: Trans [ ] Call for Submissions

YALE UNIVERSITY is pleased to announce the call for submissions for Palimpsest, Volume IX: Trans [  ]. For this issue, they are particularly interested in submissions produced by trans, genderqueer, non-binary, and two-spirit writers and artists, whether or not their work explores the experience of identifying as and being trans explicitly. Palimpsest is a biannual print publication run by graduate and professional students at Yale University, featuring fiction, poetry, visual art, nonfiction, and media related to architecture and music.

We are pleased to announce the call for submissions for our upcoming issue, Volume IX: TRANS [       ].

Across. Beyond. Between. TRANS [       ] bridges what once was discrete or disparate—even as it sets itself apart. Rather than merely breaking old, inflexible rules, TRANS [       ] inaugurates brand new ones, evincing an openness to fluidity and flux. TRANS [       ]  alerts us to those possibilities that exist on the other side, rendering what is knowable into an open field of our own making.

Submissions approaching this topic from a variety of perspectives, genres, and media, including sound and video, are welcome. For this issue, we are interested particularly in submissions produced by trans, genderqueer, non-binary, and two-spirit writers and artists—whether or not their work explores the experience of identifying as and being trans explicitly.

Legal History Workshop - Margot Canaday

THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA’S Legal History Workshop will be held on Thursday, November 9 from 4:05 – 6:00 PM at Mondale Hall Room 473 with guest scholar Margot Canaday.
