This class will explore the intersections of surfing, war, and tourism, addressing how a pastime commonly associated with mindless pleasure has in fact been implicated in some of the major global developments of the last two hundred years. The class, which will take you to Nicaragua, one of the safest countries in Latin America, is called Surfing, War, and TourismThe class combines academic instruction in the history of surfing and of U.S. foreign policy in Latin America (especially Nicaragua) with an exciting experiential component: you will learn how to surf!  In addition to our time along the coast, we will visit a couple of beautiful colonial cities and do some zip-lining down a jungle mountain.
