Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize for Best Doctoral Dissertation in American Studies

THE GRADUATE PROGRAM is now accepting nominations for the Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize for Best Doctoral Dissertation in American Studies. For more information about the award, click here. Current ASA members who completed or will complete their dissertations between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 and are receiving a PhD degree in American Studies, American ethnics studies, or American women’s studies are eligible. Completed applications are due by Friday, June 1. For more information, see below.

The Graduate Program is now soliciting nominations for the Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize for Best Doctoral Dissertation in American Studies. More information about the Gabriel Prize can be found via this link: 


Eligibility: Current ASA members who completed or will complete their dissertations between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 and are receiving a PhD degree in American studies, American ethnic studies, or American women's studies.

For Advisers: If you have an advisee in the process of finishing who will successfully defend and officially submit his/her/their dissertation to the Grad School byJune 30, 2018 and you want to recommend them for one of the two nominations in the Department of American Studies, then please write a letter addressed to the American Studies awards committee explaining why you feel the dissertation deserves the Gabriel Prize. This letter is due to Deja Just pulf0003@umn.edu (cc: kfajardo@umn.edu) by Wed, May 2nd (4:30pm). Additional materials will be requested for the two selected nominees. Please read the Gabriel Prize website, so you are aware of the additional materials needed. Completed applications are due to Gabriel Prize/ASA on June 1stDeja and I will work with you in the coming weeks to get the additional materials together.

For Graduate Students: Based on the eligibility rules above, if you would like to self-nominate yourself and your completed dissertation, then please meet with your Advisor(s) to express your interests and ask them to follow the directions above.
