Curious about what you can expect as a Health Policy Research Scholar? Here’s a rundown of the five-year experience:
Year 1: The first year curriculum focuses on theory and policy fundamentals. Lecture-based courses cover introductory public and population health frameworks; the basics of economic, sociological, and political science theory; and models of social justice. Scholars also explore the role of government, health systems, and communities in developing and implementing policy.
Year 2: The second, highly interactive year focuses on policy analysis and translation. Scholars will learn how to write a policy memo, participate in discussions on the role of media and public opinion, and practice writing for various audiences. They’ll also have lectures on different tools for health policy analysis—such as cost-benefit analysis and an introduction to using health impact assessments.
Year 3: This year is all about leadership training. Scholars learn leadership theory and how to leverage their own assets and strengths to become leaders in their fields. An equal combination of lecture and discussion facilitates active learning and leadership among the scholars.
Year 4: A seminar series on health policy and leadership explores topics like mental health, health disparities, and environmental health, building on the health policy and leadership training the scholars received in previous years.
The Health Policy Research Scholars’ robust curriculum is delivered through online courses and in-person experiences (travel expenses are paid by the program). Funding is available for four years; a non-funded fifth year is an option for additional support and training as needed.
